Cloverleaf strolls up behind Kinzie, and politely lifts his hat to the monk.

Teddy, club resting on his shoulder, is more interested in the buildings behind the monk than talking to him.

The monk takes a few seconds, then replies: "Would these be books you have, or books you want?"

The monastery buildings visible through the gate are mostly single story brick structures; but the abbey itself is made of stone, and a barn like structure (probably a barn, but an expensive one if so) is wood on a stone foundation.

"Books that we want." says Cloverleaf, firmly. "I'm looking to start a collection."

"I see." After a few more seconds, he calls over his shoulder: "Sister Edwidge? Could you see if himself is free for an audience with some adventurers?" While the young woman in question goes trotting on off into the abbey, he adds to the three in front of him: "He may just tell us to take you to the chief copyist; but we'll see."

Kinzie mutters, "Knowing his luck, she'll come back with complementary copies of the complete Merlin."

"Thank you." says Cloverleaf, politely, with a smile. He waits for Sister Edwidge to return.

A few minutes go by, and the young woman trots back out. She addresses the party herself: "He wants to know if the three of you are available for some work."

"Yes."

Teddy speaks up before Cloverleaf can say anything. Book are okay, and all that, but hitting things with a club is why he left school.

Since Teddy had spoken first, Cloverleaf shrugs and goes along with it. "Sure." he says.

"It pays, right?" Kinzie looks forlornly into her purse. "Like, actual pay, not just some books for knife-ears here."

The woman shrugs slightly, and tells Kinzie "He didn't say, but that's probably what he has in mind. Unless you want to volunteer to do it for the good of our community and the love of the gods, of course. Many people do." She seems perfectly serious, but it's not hard to hear an unspoken 'and many don't' at the end of that. "Follow me, then. With brother Gate-keepers kind permission?" He nods solemnly: "Of course, sister Guide. Good luck, adventurers."

"Thank you, Brother Gatekeeper." says Cloverleaf politely, as he follows Sister Guide into the Abbey. "I don't think money's all that important, really." he continues, as he strolls along. "I find it generally turns up if it's really needed."

Teddy snorts. Either at the whole volunteering for the job without being paid, or at Cloverleaf's optimism. Perhaps at both.

He nods at the gatekeeper as he passes, eager to see what the inside of the place looks like. It was likely his ancestors had burned down a place like this at one time.

As the walk by the abbey, the woman tells Cloverleaf "His name is really Brother Paul. Brother Gatekeeper and Sister Guide is just a joke of ours."

At a guess, this place hasn't been burned down in a while. Still, they are rebuilding the roof of one corner of the abbey; a place with this many buildings of this size is probably at the task of fixing at least one of them more or less continuously. The other buildings that appear are mostly stone if people seem to live in them, wood on stone for animals, barns, and workshops. The one notable difference is what seems to be a small artificial hill; and it is to that structure that the three are led. Outside a large iron-shod door set in one side they find several monastics in discussion. One of them, a slender middle aged fellow, steps away to meet the new group as they approach. Sister Edwidge tells him "Father, these are the three adventurers."

The man nods. "I'm Father Smith, and the gods have seen fit to make me responsible for this place. You three would be...?"
