My understanding is that Chaz uses a limited form of magical omniscience to apply Torg's (or whoever is using the sword) personal definition of innocence to the target.
I thought I remember Chaz saying something that strongly implied this.
Huge flaw in that logic -- Torg (and previous owners) don't know ANYTHING about lots of the bleeding people.
We are already assuming that Chaz can somehow read a person's complete life history (or at least the complete history of their innocence related action) from a taste of their blood. Otherwise, how can Chaz apply its rules of "innocence," no matter what they are?
My idea is merely that Chaz's rules change depending on who is holding the blade, and since as we have seen Torg has always had a happy go lucky attitude to creatures committing mass murder (it's possible he might even consider Aylee innocent, despite how many people she has devoured over the strip's history) Oasis qualifies as innocent while Torg wields the sword. Now if Riff were wielding it, she might not.
