Toward a Unified Theory of Oasis: Pete has a pattern

Postby OrzBrain » Wed Aug 22, 2012 2:51 pm

Pete is definitely the master of the unexpected plot twist, but what about the expected plot twists, the ones that everyone knows are coming? I'm thinking of two cases in point, Sasha and His Masterness.

Both cases were heavily speced before hand, and in both cases Pete did something rather similar -- he averaged the spec together and then added a few unexpected elements. (It is my belief that Pete has a good idea what the current spec is. He may not read the SRC forum, but he does plant the red herrings, and I think he is smart enough to know where they lead).

With His Masterness, virtually every theory wound up being right to some extent. Both Riff and Schlock WERE His Masterness, etc...
Then Sasha. Folks have been saying for years that she was an agent of some kind, and now that turns out to be right, but not quite in the way most people thought. She doesn't appear to be related to Kusari, and she may not be Hereti Corp's agent.

How might this apply to Oasis? Pete has placed many hints and red herrings over the years. I think elements of all of them are correct.
Perhaps Oasis is a weaponized ghost/spirit creature with a strong link to the Sun Twin and/or phoenix mythology, which Dr Hereti trapped and used to animate a series of cloned cybernetically/genetically enhanced bodies, which are controlled, tended and force grown by an artificial intelligence, which uses some form of jump-jet boosted drop pod to deploy them from a secret base to the general location where Oasis most recently died. Due to errors in the cloning process each of the bodies has a slightly different neural architecture, and processes Oasis's life experiences and directives differently.
And maybe Kusari is a lesser version of the same technology, with just the AI and the cloned (or possibly stolen and reprogrammed/enhanced in this case) bodies, which lacks the supernatural element that Hereti was able to control and make human, as well as, possibly, the cloning. Which is why she wears a mask. (If you've watched Joss Whedon's Dollhouse, you know what I'm thinking of.)

And maybe the purpose of the supernatural element in Oasis is not about her resurrection, or pyrokinesis, but the web of fate. Because Kusari and all humans are creatures of the web, bound to it, but the Oasis spirit is something different, something that existed before it, and that cannot be controlled by the web, making her an agent of change which acts outside of it, a prophecy killer.
In fact, Hereti may have considered the pyrokinesis to be not a feature but a design flaw, the true nature of the Phoenix spirit coming out and trying to escape. That would explain why Oasis seems to have little control over it. Otherwise, why not integrate the ability into Override B-1? It would make her even more effective and unstoppable, more capable of destroying Hereti Corp assets.

Or perhaps it's something else. But I'm willing to bet whatever the truth turns out to be, it will have elements of many or all of the Oasis theories, all mixed together.

Lacking time to fully do this thread justice at the moment, but you might find my own analysis of Oasis' patterns interesting here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19101

Goatlord42 wrote:Oasis' bipolar switch from freethinking/independent and "Giddy Lovestruck Schoolgirl" seems to be the central conflicting drives of her character, and nature as a.... well, whatever she is. I've also noticed something of an alternating pattern between "incarnations."

1) "Naked Chick" Oasis- assuming she hadn't died previously to meeting Torg- is the "original". Fully under Dr. Steve's control at the time and before his last commands to her, trying to read onto later patterns may be tricky. But we do see the "calm/seemingly self- controlled" and "completely under Dr. Steve's control" pattern playing out at different points (like when they tried to "escape" together). But Dr. Steve claimed he was completely controlling her the whole time, so its hard to tell what was free thought and what was just a ruse to confuse Torg.

2) "Giddy Oasis" came for Torg on his date with Zoe after "dying" in Dr Steve's lab, and stayed giddy/insane right to the end.

3) "Depressed Oasis" came for Torg after that death during his "date" with Sasha, but seemed alot more self-reflective and in control of her self- though still heavily in deniel/threatening anytime someone questioned the inconsistencies in her story.

4)"Alive again at the Hospital Front Desk Oasis" was giddy and silly again- then shifted towards dark and insane to go after Zoe in Fire and Rain. The same insanity continued through giddy again after their "engagement," and she remained insane but pliable during Dangerous Days when they sprung her to fight Cloney.

5) Oasis who came back after Dangerous Days was more stable again, intentionally avoiding Torg to try and "discover herself," which led to the Zalias and her Sensei. At this point things get complicated, as she starts to actually gain some self-awareness and control. Patterns likely get harder to read after this point.

The next 2 incarnations are a little hard to sort out.

6) "Back from the grave to try and kill Straw-man Oasis" was the first time we saw clear memories of a death from her point of view (hovering near her body to see what happened next). Something about this incarnation seemed "off" to me though, in her first few moments of fighting him she was very much in "giddy teenager" mode. Likewise in her discussion of her true nature with her Sensei after the battle... she seemed more prone to silliness and denial. But she made some hard choices to leave her family for their own safety. This Incarnation seemed to continue large aspects of #4, working at her self-control in the cave, and even while she allowed her Override to tempt her to kill Hereticorp, she seemed pretty under control- UNTIL Schlock foolishly took out her anchor and sent her back to "default in love with Torg mode."

7) We've never met Oasis 7, only know she quickly moved to protect the Zalia's and vanish. She may be back to a "controlled" mode, perhaps finding a new anchor after Sensei's death in her "family." Perhaps this will make her less easy to manipulate in the future. We just don't know- though she doesn't seem to have made efforts to look for Torg yet. How much she remembers of Zoe's conversation about her and Torg's love for each other, and the fact she should have killed them should get REAL interesting next time we see them meeting.

I like your analysis a lot. Still thinking about what conclusions to draw from it, though.

Sure, take your time. I've never been able to keep up with the entirety of the Oasis tracking threads here, but I do notice things and wanted to jot the patterns I've seen down while fresh in my mind.
