Is it bad that that comment makes me want to watch Children of the Corn?

I'm really going all out this year. And all of the exercise will certainly be awesome. I've not gone outside hardly at all lately because of the cold. Have you ever tried lazy bed potatoes?

Do you mean getting an old tire, placing it on its side on the ground and filling it full of dirt for use as a makeshift pot? Harvest by flipping the tire over and grabbing the potato.

Interesting; but lazy bed potatoes are a trifle different. Prepare the bed, then just push the seed potato into the ground an eighth inch or so. Cover them with straw or hay (6-8 inches baled, 12-18 inches loose) then essentially ignore them. The few weeds that develop are really easy to remove, and the potatoes develop in the straw so there's no need to hoe or hill them (though you might need to add a bit more cover from time to time). To harvest just push the straw aside and pick them up. Ok, check the soil to see if any burrowed; but most of them will be lying right there. It worked well for me last year, and it's what I'm going to be doing again this upcoming season.

That sounds incredibly easy. I'll have to try it.
In other news, I went and picked up some basic supplies for chicken rearing. A feeder, a heat lamp and a big metal tub to put the chicks in. Only things I need that's left to get are the food, the bedding, and the chicks themselves. I'm looking for a specific breed and don't know when they'll be in stock locally, so I'm gathering the supplies I need before hand so I won't have to wait to get them when the chicks arrive.

Just got my first six chickens. Not of the breed I'd have preferred, but the local store that sells chicks stops selling them on the 21st so it was either that or buy a minimum of fifteen of the breed I want online. I'll keep checking back and if they do get the breed I want I'll buy another six (assuming they're pullets and not cockerels. I want me some egg layers.)

This video. If you give a bird a puzzle box in the name of science... The study write-up also had me snickering, because I could imagine the scientists trying to describe all manner of hilarity in the driest language they could possibly muster.
