The other thing that shows Trump is a poor strategist is that he would've done far better to leave the Khans alone and slam Hillary for her foreign policy. He could've said that the Khans' son would still be alive if Hillary hadn't supported the Iraq war. He could've called Hillary a hypocrite by criticizing the Obama administration for shafting veterans. By attacking Hillary, could've implied that the Khans were irrational, distraught fools being cynically exploited by the Weak On Terror Democrats who just wanted a Muslim token for their politically correct Pokemon collection. All of those attacks would be well in line with Trump's vicious and controversial approach without putting him in the position of being the guy to personally insult a grieving mother. But Trump's ego is infantile and all his attacks are basically along the lines of "You're a fat ugly bitch with saggy boobs! Neener neener!"

He did pull off the "McCain is not a hero, because he was a POW and heros don't get caught" IIRC. So it's not suprising that he tried something like that again.

And republicans are now standing before the alternative of openly "backstabbing" their own candidate or weaseling around and thus implicitly condone Trumps attacks, or to openly support them in one way or an other.

And as long as the bulk of the party does not pick the first option, then he has won a game of chicken (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_(game)) and thus he cements his winner image. And while this might still hurt his overall chances of winning the election, he needs regular chicken game wins, to keep his core supporters happy.

And it looks like he's going down with his ship. The math gurus over at fivethirtyeight.com put Clinton's chances of winning the general election at between 77% and 87%, which says an Everest-sized landslide. Trump has managed to alienate practically every single swing state.

So of course he's telling his supporters that the election's going to be rigged.

I suppose you have to wonder what the alternative is for those folks. Admit they're doomed to fail, and that they and their values have been rejected by the nation as a whole? Down that road lies questions about what's wrong with them. Better a conspiracy theory that lets them pretend they were cheated.

Sidenote: I just saw the thing about Trump dumping his campaign manager yesterday. The guy who is on the public record as advocating for tyrants in Washington DC. Who was named in a Ukrainian corruption investigation. I wonder if Trump ditched Manafort due to the Ukrainian scandal, or whether he got rid of him for not allowing him to be enough of a dick.

Anyway, what a motley collection Trump supporters are. Supposedly there's a big chunk of research from Gallup showing that Trump supporters aren't mostly blue collar workers who've lost their jobs due to trade and immigration. They do come from relatively ethnically homogeneous counties with lower inter-generational economic mobility and more health problems; basically white middle-class people living in meth and OxyContin country.

They are:
1. Bigots angry that they're not allowed to be bigoted anymore
2. Authoritarians who think posturing is equivalent to strong leadership
3. Diehard Republicans who'd rather hold their nose and vote Trump because Clinton is unthinkable
4. Single-issue voters terrified of what a Democratic president would do to the Supreme Court
5. Bernie-or-busters who can't tell the difference between a centrist and a lunatic?

Is the Hillaries health angel tactically a good move?

After all this election both vice candidates are less scary/disliked then the candidate, so voting for the less healthy candidate might be a strategy. Especially for people, who do not like Hillary on an emotional level, but agree that she is the lesser evil on a rational one, "She is not going to last long anyway" could mitigate the emotional impact of voting for her.

How did I not notice this until now? There is a civil lawsuit being filed against Trump for child rape.

His accuser is a woman who says he raped her in the 1990s at a party, when she was 13 years old. Trump used to hang out with a notorious rich child molester called Jeffrey Epstein, who is now a convicted sex offender. Epstein used to lure underaged girls to his parties with promises of modelling careers. Obviously, since the lawsuit was only filed a few months ago, it has not been proven, but man, this keeps getting crazier. The Clintons are fairly shady in this regard too (though at least Bill Clinton was never accused of molesting a child)... It's a race to the bottom.

Naah, Trump's pretty much there. As for Secretary Clinton? Tolerating an unfaithful spouse doesn't quite have the same je ne sais quoi as partying with a pedophile last I looked.

I'm not talking about Bill's cheating. He was accused of several instances of sexual harassment and at least one assault back in the 90s.

He's been accused of an awful lot of things. Anything substantial come of this set?

Yeah, coals to Newcastle; but it amused me that Cruz decided that it was in his interest to endorse Trump. The mind boggles just what he thinks it's going to buy him, unless it's the other way around.

Speculation is that Reince Priebus leaned on him hard enough to make him cave. Gotta look forward to 2020. It's even funnier considering how Trump previously said he would not accept Cruz's endorsement. There is not one milliliter of integrity in the whole group.

That worked about as well as I expected. He started out all right, but he lacked the stability. She was able to get and keep him off-balance.

As I said elsewhere, debating Trump is like fighting Crash Man - you shoot in the air, he dives into the bullet and misses you, then you walk away from the explosion, about face and repeat.
