Or alternately, real Republican election fraud could be uncovered and then it will be a long two months (leading to a long four years). Hell, it simply being impossible to recount a lot of districts (absent looking for a hack) could easily lead to a long two months etc. I wonder how the Supremes would like to see another Bush v Gore come along...

I wouldn't get my hopes up. It's a long shot that the recount would flip the electoral college. And I think the Supreme court would rather take their chances with a discount garbage firesale president than publicly call into question the very legitimacy of American democracy. This. might be a good time to invest in bananas.

I'm not happy with this election.

Flip the electoral college? Naah; the Republicans would refuse to admit the first set of votes were wrong, there would be dueling delegations, and the whole mess would wind up in the House (who would chose some Republican or other). I suspect it would take direct intervention by both the Supremes and the White House (which is to say, Federal law enforcement and/or Federal Troops) to get Clinton into the White House if it were shown that she actually won the Electoral College and overt election fraud stole it from her. Obama won't do that; but now the folks in the cheap seats on both sides would be going ballistic.

Which is to say, it would be a long two months before a long four years.

Oh, and in passing; there is a significant annual drop in sea ice area in both hemispheres right now; we're apparently down about 5% in one and 14% in the other compared to last year. Yet more subtle hints of accelerating climate change are really what we need to be seeing just now. Not that this has any political significance, of course.

That makes the both of us.

There's a small perverse part of me that's hoping that I am completely wrong about everything. That every single thing I think I know about how the world works is completely wrong, and Trump will be a great president, America will be restored to prosperity, there will be no terrorist attacks, global warming isn't real, there will be peace on earth, all the bad people will be punished, all the good people will be rewarded, it'll be wall to wall baseball and apple pies and parades.

The perverse part of me wants him to fail miserably, but that's like hoping the driver of your bus crashes into something.

If anyone is interested I've compiled a strategy guide on responding to the election on my site: http://popculturephilosopher.com/catego ... trategies/

That depends on how you define "fail".

I hope he doesn't fail at foreign policy because that would be a disaster, but I want him to fail miserably at scrapping the climate change agreement, deporting millions of people, and dismantling Obamacare.

I will be happy if he fails to nominate a regressive conservative to the SCOTUS and accidentally picks someone who begins expressing sane opinions once on the job.

I feel like this line of conversation could be repurposed into a WGARS game somehow...

Trump's basically an unprincipled fool who will adopt whatever positions he thinks will make him look good. It's his cabinet of horrors we've got to worry about.

1. Bannon, Chief Strategist. Ugh. Enough said.
2. Flynn, National Security Adviser. A guy Colin Powell called "right wing nutty". Abusive to staff, likes torture, fond of conspiracy theories.
3. Pompeo, CIA Director. Likes torture, NSA spying, all kinds of fun things.
4. Mattis, Defense Secretary. Hardcore military man. Saner than Flynn, but that's a low bar. Opposes torture, so that's one out of three. If Giulani ends up as Secretary of State, that'll be one out of four.
5. Mnuchin, Treasury Secretary. Hedge fund guy with no known public policy views. In it for the fancy job title.
6. Haley, Ambassador to the UN. No foreign policy experience but what the heck, it's not like they expect the UN to be any use or even relevant.
7. DeVos, Education Secretary. Doesn't believe in public schools. Played key role in implementing one of the country's least successful and most poorly regulated charter school programs.
8. Tom Price, Health and Human Services. The only politician who has written out a detailed plan to repeal Obamacare; his proposed replacement plan is one of the more half-assed ones.
9. Sessions, Attorney General. Voting rights act? What voting rights act?
10. Ross, Commerce Secretary. Billionaire vulture capitalist. Once negotiated deal to bail out Trump's Taj Mahal casino.
11. Chao, Transport Secretary. Was once Bush's Labor Secretary. Did pretty much what you'd expect. Probably the most normal of the bunch so far.

You might recall that back in 2004 Ohio was stolen for Dubya, along with the election, by the Republicans. Local party stalwarts were convicted and imprisoned under state law for election fraud because of it, which is a pretty clear hint that it happened. Mind, the Republican in charge of Federal law in that region then denied there was any reason to launch an investigation and that was that. Still, the GOP was naughty, and then sacrificed the flunkies afterwards without much ado.

That noted, one wonders how long the Republicans will keep trying to interfere with examining the election in the three states currently under dispute. Throwing the locals to the wolves once the nationals are covered would be perfectly in keeping with their history and values, and lawsuits cost money. Well, we'll see if they keep it up past the 19th.

Now Trump has appointed a fast food mogul for Labor Secretary, who will put all his effort into keeping the minimum wage down, limiting overtime pay and ignoring workplace safety violations.

Japan's Softbank has sucked up to Trump and allowed him to take credit for their investment plans hoping that he'll weaken anti-trust regulations for them. Then he's threatening to pull the Air Force One contract from Boeing because their CEO apparently said something mean about him. Trump has positioned himself as Santa Claus, doling out favours to companies that kiss his butt and punishing those that criticize him. Regulatory capture for the low, low price of a photo-op.

Trump's using the old school Republican playbook on steroids. The old way was to use God, guns and gays to get people to vote for tax cuts for the rich. Now it's about using bigotry and paranoia to get people to vote for kleptocracy.

Yeah, ever since the election results came in he's been picking up steam on his quest to find some new low in the depths he's trying to sink to.

He hasn't changed a bit. None of them have. This is just who they are,and where they've been for decades.

Just as a thought experiment, I am idly curious what would happen if Hillary decided to instruct her electors to vote for, say, Susan Collins. Would enough ABT Republicans hop on board to make it work? Granted by their standards she's a Trotskyite, but at least she's from the right party.

...Trump is sounding like trouble. On the bright side, he's clearly not deliberately messing up the country; on the other side, messing up is happening and he's not wonderfully interested in stopping it...
