Okay, that's not great. It's not as bad as it could be; it definitely looks like the start of a change, and the process of the change itself will not be pleasant.

The results of the change, whether those will be positive or negative in the long term... will have to be seen. I think it depends a lot on just how much they crack down, and just how unhappy people are about the resulting crackdown - not just the most unhappy people, but the average person - and just how far the government is prepared to go to quell any misbehaviour.

Look, there's no way this can possibly be good. The only question is how bad it will get. It seems to have taken a few days for the Bosses Upstairs to figure out how to talk about the riots, but I think they're moving the goalposts. There's been a couple of pro-establishment flunkies who've come out and said that the police would've been justified in shooting the rioters dead. High level Chinese officials are using the words "radical separatists" and "terrorist inclinations" to describe them (as opposed to just "criminals" or "thugs", because most major cities in the West have seen riots that were significantly worse, and they didn't pull out the "terrorist" word). Then we have others playing the good cop, saying that we don't need stronger national security legislation because things are under control.

I think what they're doing is articulating worst case scenarios that were previously unthinkable (shooting people dead!) so that whatever they do end up doing, we'll be relieved that it wasn't that bad, instead of angry that they're screwing us over.

And that would lead directly to a situation that could be compared with the Sharpeville Massacre (a historical incident in which a bunch of protestors were shot dead), which is really, really bad.
