I think we're all waiting for tips. There seemed to be a veritable smorgasbord of requests for paths in Photoshop, which seems to have fried our resident Photoshop guru's mind...
I myself am waiting on tips and tricks for Jasc Paintshop Pro.
11 days in Grafenwoehr, maybe a 4 day pass, and hoping to finally get a new kilt.

I have a question about Gimp 2.0 and making patterns.

I just made this really neat "hair" pattern but I have no idea how to go about making it into a pattern. Is there a Sluggite in the house who can post the steps to saving a selection as a pattern?

Google to the rescue.

Basically, just save it (via the GIMP) as a .pat file in the relevant directory (/usr/share/gimp/1.2/patterns/ is preferred (sustitute for 1.2 as necessary) since all users on that machine can then access it, but if you do not have write access to that directory or you are paranoid then ~/.gimp/patterns will give you, and only you (unless someone else has your password or other means of access to your home directory), access to the pattern).

You may need to close and re-open gimp, unless you can find some other way to refresh the pattern list.

Clear!

To make spiffy looking lightning/energy as seen in current avatar. (Using Photoshop 7.0)

Create a new layer (Cntrl-shift-N), and fill it with white.
Filter->Render->Clouds
Filter->Render->Difference Clouds
Cntrl-I (Invert)
Image->Adjustments->Levels

There are two sliders at the bottom of this window. Drag the top, black, left slider to the right until you get a lightning effect - I would suggest leaving a bit of the fuzziness. Then take a black paintbrush and use it on any place that there is lightning where it should not be - too much fuzziness in one spot, a bit just off to the side, ect.

Image->Variations (at the very bottom) - then change the hue of the lightning according to how you want it to look.

To use this lightning, go to the layer properties window and set it to linear dodge and place it over the layer that you would like the lightning to be seen. And voila! instant spiffy lightning.

Not Photoshop, but GIMP. I'm learning to use it (Taking a class in school on it, actually), and I want some cool things to do in GIMP. Pretty much any cool trick, effect, anything.

Hey, how about a list of things that we can do to convert a "photoshop" tutorial into a "GIMP" tutorial?

Because there are so few Gimp tutorials out there...

Some new tutorial sites...

http://biorust.com/index.php?page=tutorial
http://www.phong.com/tutorials/
http://www.photoshoptechniques.com/

Biorust has some pretty spiffy ones.

PST has the technique I used in making Soulhunter's avatar, with the flaming words.

Updated the corpse blending tutorial for GIMP I wrote earlier in this thread with a simpler technique suggested by qlipoth but with making layers as needed instead of making dozens of clones up front.

if there is any interest, i'll see about creating one.
