How delightfully... Byzantine? I'm sure there's an equally appropriate local reference to feckless bureaucracy, knowing that part of the world.

Happily, it looks like SOPA is now dead in the water as seen here. Well at least while this administration is in power.

But didn't he also say he wouldn't sign NDAA?

Yeah...

There is a subtle difference between the two. Not signing SOPA doesn't have any real ramifications; nothing changes if SOPA isn't signed and SOPA isn't attached to some other vital government function.

Not signing the NDAA means the military doesn't get funded. Now, while I and Jorodryn might not view that as a huge negative, it is nonetheless a vital difference between the two legislations.

That's a good point, FB; however, Obama still threatened to veto it.

I definitely would have vetoed it. My biggest beef with SOPA and so many other laws is that we don't need more laws... we need just to enforce the ones already on the books. How many different laws do we need to say that piracy is a no no and you will be punished if you violate them?

My beef with SOPA is that it assumes guilt.

My attention was brought today to another bill working its way through US Congress, similarly along the lines that protecting copyright is the highest calling of mankind. As things currently stand in the US, you have good regulations which ensure that any research funded by the National Institute of Health (ie. by public money), must be open access within 12 months of publication.

Obviously, I'm sure you're all appalled at the threat this represents to the copyright of the publisher, but fear no more! Your representatives have brought you the Research Works Act, which will "ensure the continued publication and integrity of peer-reviewed research works by the private sector", and forbid NIH from making the health research the public paid for accessible to the public. Thank god for that!

I just found out both my Senators are co-sponsors of PIPA, the Senate form of SOPA.

I've been unable to contact Tom Udall to complain to him about it. His site is down. I find this deliciously ironic.

I found that one of my senators is listed as undecided while the other is backing PIPA and my district's house rep wasn't listed when I looked, so probably undecided as well. You better believe I'll be writing to them first chance I get.

For those interested, here are the links to the lists of who is for/against SOPA and PIPA

My Senator has opposed SOPA and PIPA since this summer, so I'm gravy. The rest of the Kansans have said nothing so far on the issue, including my Rep. I'm disappointed that the Senator I voted for in Missouri (McCaskill) is for it, though.

It appears that all my state's congresspeople (Utah) oppose SOPA and PIPA, thank goodness. Sen. Hatch originally co-sponsored PIPA, but he says now that the response from experts and his constituents has convinced him that it's "not ready for prime time" and he's withdrawn his co-sponsorship.

Hmm, Cornyn went from sponsoring a bill making streaming copyrighted material a felony eight months ago to suddenly becoming incredibly reasonable on the 12th. Hutchison's undecided, and Ron Paul doesn't want the government to do anything, which is in our favor this time. So at least two out of three for me. Not bad for Texas.

both of my senators and my congressman are undecided. I'm guessing from past practice though that they would all vote in favor of Pipa and Kate.. I mean SOPA.
