I'm riffing off of today's
AV Club Q and A. Which fake people did you have crushes on as a kid? Who still makes you sigh, despite your adulthood and their fictionality?
Childhood:
Robin Hood from the Disney version. Yes, the fox. He was charming! He was courageous! He liked kids! He had a British accent! My VHS got a lot of play thanks to that crush.
Older Pete from
The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Young Pete was spot on my age, so I knew older Pete would never glance my way even if he existed IRL. Still, I loved his laid back attitude, and how he took the weirdness of his town in stride.
Spike Speigel from
Cowboy Bebop. I was introduced to anime through Cowboy Bebop at the age of 15, and lordy did my lil' fangirl heart pitter pat at Spike. Today, I think Spike would be just about the worst person to date (mercurial, thoughtless, arrogant, kinda shallow -- not to mention that past and his hang-ups over a certain woman), but I loved him as a teen. Thank god I didn't do fan fic back then, else it would have been...oh, god, so bad...
Current Crushes
The Goblin King from
Labarynth. This is a crush that never died, though it began in childhood. Listen, if a fellow whisked me off to his magical kingdom to solve a riddle that seemingly will save someone I don't really love all that much but I feel a duty to protect, and that entire premise was just an elaborate set-up to get me to fall in love with him and his world, and that fellow ALSO looked like David Bowie with crazed owl hair and a codpiece, I'd be hard-pressed to dismiss him. I mean, good lord, "I will be your slave?" Gorgeous ball room masquerades? Not to mention the MAGICAL AWESOMENESS OF THAT WORLD! Metaphoric lessons of growing up and leaving childish things behind be damned, I STILL want in on that.
Russia from
Hetalia Axis Powers. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's a psychopath. I think this mostly has something to do with my fascination with Russian history. It's just so strange compared to Western Europe or Asia or North America (the other areas and eras I know fairly well). I mean, there's the usual wars and stuff, but there's this huge sense of "F you guys, we're gonna do our own thing, thankyouverymuch" from its incarnation to the current day. Seeing the country come to life as an anthropomorphic personification just makes me squee.
The Doctor. I mean,
come on.
