>NORTH

White Junction

You are in a bare tiled corridor, white tiles and cold white walls. The ceiling is acoustical panelling divided by illuminated strips of plastic. The hall runs north and east, with a branch curving away to the southeast.

>NORTH

Corner At Doors

The hallway runs both east and south from here. There's a featureless metal door to the west, which is closed; a more normal one stands closed to the north.

One of the ceiling panels is missing, leaving a rectangular gap above you.

>INVENTORY
You are carrying nothing worthy of attention, except a lockpick and a toolcase (which is open) (in which are a minilamp, a scan scrambler, an acid pack, a blast tab, a voice module, a radio module, a timer, a toggle switch, a pushbutton, a voice transmitter and a key transmitter).

Surprise!

Before you can go north again, you have to...

>OPEN NORMAL DOOR
You open the normal door.

>NORTH

Storage Closet

This room is small and, perhaps, rarely used -- not dirty, but not quite as clean and white as the corridors. The door to the south is open.

Two rough wooden crates are backed in a corner of the closet.

On the larger crate is a bolt wrench.

>GET WRENCH
Taken.

>SOUTH

Corner At Doors

The hallway runs both east and south from here. There's a featureless metal door to the west, which is closed; a more normal one stands open to the north.

One of the ceiling panels is missing, leaving a rectangular gap above you.

>UP
The hole is a foot out of reach.

>PUSH CRATE SOUTH
Which do you mean, the larger crate or the smaller crate?

I'll try them both...

>LARGER
The larger crate is too heavy to move.

>PUSH SMALLER CRATE SOUTH
Even the smaller crate is too heavy to move.

Stopping here since the crates can't move.

>WEST
The only exit is south.

It looks like your intention is to open the metal door on the west wall at Corner At Doors. Proceeding as such.

>SOUTH

Corner At Doors

The hallway runs both east and south from here. There's a featureless metal door to the west, which is closed; a more normal one stands open to the north.

One of the ceiling panels is missing, leaving a rectangular gap above you.

>OPEN DOOR
Which do you mean, the normal door or the metal door?

>METAL
It doesn't open by itself.

>USE LOCKPICK
That's not a verb I recognize.

"Use" is generally too complex a verb to implement in most interactive fiction, since it expects the parser to intuit the most logical use for the item in the given context. Presuming that you mean...

>PUT LOCKPICK ON PLATE
The pick locks itself rigidly to the black plate by the door. Its status dot flashes to yellow.

Ah, yes. Wrong room. Ooops.

Now... how rigidly is this thing attached?

>STEP ON LOCKPICK
That's not something you can enter.

Clever idea, but you really don't have to be that clever to reach the hole...

The lockpick's status dot is sliding towards green.

>JUMP UP
You bend and leap. Your fingers brush the edge of the hole -- catch, and you concentrate on holding on. Your feet swing gently a foot above the floor.

Uh! A sharp edge is digging into one finger. You shift your grasp hastily, but a few drops of blood smear across the hole's lip.

The lockpick's status dot fades to pure green, and flicks steady blue.

The metal door slides open. Beyond, several people are working at cluttered desks. One looks up absently, and then stares; and then a loud buzzer echoes down the hall. Moments later, three guards charge towards you, weapons drawn.

-- glaring light...

Interrogation Chamber (imprisoned in the chair)
You blink away memory. The dim room comes again into focus, and the man behind the desk.

"That would be the logistics office. Five agents working at the time, very diligent men and women. None of whom recall their door popping open on them." He shakes his head. "Your electronic key is a lovely toy, but you don't have to play with it for my sake." He touches a control.

...glaring light --

White Junction
You stand lightly in a bare tiled corridor, white tiles and cold white walls. The ceiling is acoustical panelling divided by illuminated strips of plastic. The hall runs north and east, with a branch curving away to the southeast.

As you can see here, some doors and objects are red herrings. But at least you managed to get up to the hole.

Objectives:
  • Avoid saying anything that might get you killed
  • Escape interrogation
  • Complete your mission
The interrogator demands to know:
  • ...what you did next after entering the complex.
What the interrogator has accepted:
  • You entered the complex through the alley door, which you opened using the lockpick.
  • You carried a bunch of sophisticated spy tools.
What the interrogator has rejected and why:
  • You did not leave the alley without breaking into the complex because you were caught inside.
  • You are too sophisticated a spy to have been standing there banging on the alley door.
  • You did not get captured without accomplishing anything. (It is not yet clear why he has rejected this.)
  • You did not set off any alarms because he would have known if you had.
  • You did not open the door to the logistics office (the metal door at "Corner at Doors") because the agents there would have reported it if you had.

The door to the storage closet is closed again (since we haven't opened it yet this time around), so...

Okay, so you're dangling from the edge of the hole. Now what?

>CLIMB UP
What do you want to climb up?

>HOLE
The space above the ceiling panels is only a few inches high. You can't fit into it.
