Singularity Hunters: The Rigel Incident

The last guard watches mournfully until the others are out of sight, then turns towards the front door. Spot could leap out and attempt to restrain him (on the side of a public road, in full sight of everyone) or just quietly close the door and hope he doesn't notice anything odd. After all, he may just be strolling back towards the guard hut by the front gate.

Well, since this is the door that Spot doctored earlier, hopefully it will close without too much trouble. So Spot duly tries to close the door quietly.

The remaining guard doesn't appear to notice anything out of the ordinary. It's hard to tell what he's doing with the door closed, but he isn't making a lot of noise and he isn't trying to open it.

Spot tells Wilshire "Let's give him a couple of minutes to sit down." After a couple of minutes go by, Spot opens the door a crack and sticks out a few tentacles down near the ground to listen for the remaining guard.

Spot can't hear him. Should Spot peer through the crack, he's not immediately visible.

Leaving the two unconscious people behind for a moment, Spot sneaks out to see if the guard is in the guard hut.

Spot quietly opens the door and listens. There's a slight sound from the guard hut - the sound of someone shifting his weight in a chair. So there's someone in there.

...the inside of the guard hut would be entirely invisible from the road.

Spot creeps back into the building, zips down the stairs, and cuts loose some lengths of cable. It then comes back to Wilshire and hands him the cables. "I'm going to grab the guard in the hut; come in after me and tie him up. Then we can get going."

Spot duly creeps out and into the guard shed. As soon as it hears Wilshire coming, it intends to grab and immobilize the guard. If it can spare a couple of tentacles from the task, it will remove the radio and put it aside.

Wilshire moves to the hut to tie up the guard.

Spot sneaks up on the guard's hut. He flattnes himself almost the the ground, estending his tentacles widely, and then sneaks around to below the unglazed window that allows him to see people passing in and out of the gate. Spot is silent, Spot is stealthy, Spot is unseen. He prepares to leap in through the window and envelop the guard in his tentacles.

At the same time, Wilshire strolls toward the door. He steps up onto the little wooden step just outside... the step creaks. The guard is warned.

Spot leaps to the attack, throwing himself through the window just as the guard is looking towards the door.

Spot barely manages to entangle the man and hold him still. He does manage to grab the radio before the man can use it, and hold it away, but it's clear that he won't be able to hold onto the man for long. Wilshire bursts in through the door, and the man attempts to break free.

The guard manages to force Spot aside by getting one hand under Spot's main body and pushing. Spot still has the man's radio, though, and Wilshire is between him and the door.

Wilshire attempts to knock the guard out with a punch to the head.

Spot turns off and drops the radio out the window, then tries to restrain the guard again.

The radio spins out of the window and hits the ground outside; Spot gathers his tentacles beneath him and leaps for the guard again.

This time he gets a bit of a firmer grip. pinning the man's arms. Before he can struggle free, Wilshire's fist is launched at his face...

Wilshire's aim is slightly off, and the guard twists aside at the last moment; Wilshire's knuckles lightly brush his chin, but no damage is done. Ignoring for the moment the robot wrapped about his upper body, the guard makes a vigorous attempt to knee Wilshire where it would hurt most.

Wilshire easily evades the guard's clumsy attack. Placing one hand beneath the man's lifted leg, he lifts it further - leading to the inevitable result that the guard falls over backwards, over the chair, and lands on the small folding table. The table collapses under his weight, scattering playing-cards over the floor of the hut, and the guard ends up slumped against the opposite wall.

Spot holds on to the fellow. "Friend, your bosses told you the truth that their new thing would 'take over the world' and tomorrow they wouldn't need you. They left out that the new thing was an illegal AI. They failed, and most of them are dead, so the authorities are busy now; but In a little while the police will remember this building, and you'd do best as the poor innocent rent-a-cop who knows nothing about anything when they arrive."

"What do you mean, illegal AI?" scoffs the security guard. "There's no laws against AIs here!"

He glowers at Spot for a minute, and then adds "And even if there were, what the $%^#$ are you?"

He attempts to get his feet under him and lever himself up and out of Spot's hold:

He manages to trap Spot's central lump in the corner of the walls and twists, breaking free of the hold again. He stumbles slightly towards the window...
