This one is a bit stale now, but it's funny, so I'll share it anyway.
A couple of weeks ago I was on my way out of my apartment when I encountered some cops patrolling the stairwell of my apartment building. They do this periodically since this is a 'bad' neighbourhood. They wanted to see my ID (legal to do this in HK). So I got out my wallet and rummaged around. Ohcrap. No ID.
Starting to panic, I thought I must have left it at work, which I told them. They told me to follow them outside to sort it out, saying "Let's not stand in the stairwell, it's not safe since you're pregnant."
And I said, "I AM NOT PREGNANT, I AM JUST FAT!" I weigh 115 pounds at five foot three inches.
The cop seemed more taken aback by my outburst than embarrassed at calling me pregnant. So there I was, being interrogated on where I worked and who I lived with and how long I had lived there, rummaging through my wallet, starting to worry that they didn't believe me and thought I was a pregnant illegal immigrant. I didn't even have a business card from my work to show them. I pulled out my cell phone to call Ngau but they stopped me from making a call.
Crap crap crap crap. And then one of the cops spotted my ID in my wallet. I had put it in a different slot by accident because I had had to photocopy it at work and then stuffed it back in the wrong place. They glanced at it briefly and waved me off.
ETA: Oh yes, I called Ngau to tell him what happened and one of the things he said was "I've been saying that you should suck your gut in more when you stand."
