"Whoa - what the hell is going wrong with the game world? Is this normal for an MMO?" Brand looks at the monster curiously, then shrugs, and puts on a wild grin. "Well, it doesn't really matter... the bigger it is, the harder it's going to fall!"

Brand then races at the monster, snapping his arms back, generating a burst of light and speed to enchant his movements. He then charges the Oaken Bear, striking it with a heavy open-palmed slam into its side to get its attention, then stands and faces it. As soon as it rears back to strike, he's going to prepare to push its blow to the side, knocking its massive body off-balance without letting its much greater strength have an impact on him.

1-2: Light Dash.
3: Meteor Palm (Charging light magic slam)
4: Set-Up Counter Attack.

I'll need to keep training that metal-crafting skill. The better this gets, the better we'll get. Next chance we get I'll see if I can't enhance the little staff I got from the rats. Teiresias is, as usual, lost in his thoughts about the game as the group heads towards their next destination. He's dragged out quickly by the distorted audio chiming in from around the group, and quickly arms himself as he hears the roar of the bear. "Well." He says quietly. "That's unpleasant." Teiresias lays a hand on the head of his hammer, channeling his energy into it, and imbuing it with the same dark power as before. "Like hell we'll just leave you to fend off the beast yourself, friend!" He yells as he rushes towards the Oaken Bear's legs, aiming a heavy blow towards one of the bear's knees, then a wide sweep to try and knock the bear off of its feet.

Action 1&2: Dark Enhance I (Damage)
Action 3: Directed Strike (Knee)
Action 4: Wide Sweep (Feet)

The Oaken bear reacts immediately to aggression. It slams a heavy tree paw into the ground, causing it to rise up in several craggy formations. Suddenly, a flat field is now a rocky, jagged mess. Outcroppings of rock and overturned dirt are everywhere. The field is, to put it frankly, an uneven disaster. Trees overturn near the edge of the field, at least one massive oak falling across

Karie and Brand move at almost the same time, being upon the beast even as the ground settles into it's new formation. Karie's swords flash at the two front paws of the beast.

Crippling strike: 44
Defense: 30

The attack bites in, but the creature's visible bar barely ticks down at all. But the swords continue to move, spinning in a circle around her twirling body, biting deep with centripedal acceleration.

Spinning Strike: 74
Defense: 58

This attack causes the creature to be pushed back, but again, the HP bar moves oly a small amount. Not even 10 percent has fallen.

As it stumbles back, Brand on it, striking hard with great speed.

Open Palm: 80
Defense: 84

However, his fist is deflected.

ThornChance: 16

Fortunately, none of the heavy spines now covering most of the bear's surface strike him, ad he is able to dash back.

The onslaught continues as a panicked Kai hops over both their heads, striking twice rapidly at the exposed head.

Head Dance: 81
Blind Slash: 56
Defenses: 54, 72

The first hit strikes solidly as the Bear slowly regains it's balance, causing another small bit of damage. The second, however, is missed as the boss shifts back, the blade missing its eyes entirely. Kai then stands high, spinning the lance in a defensive posture.

Just in time, as the Bear launches a series of thorns from its shoulders at the three of them.

ThornBlast: 56
Spinning Defense(+10): 55(wow)

Most of them are blocked, but one drops through, and strikes Kai directly.

57
Defense: 21

The attack strikes directly, hitting Kai hard. Even lessened, the attack does 25 damage.

Defensively, Maya drops back, and throws the spear.

Long Shot: 86
Defense: 75

Striking in the leg, the spear cuts off a bit more damage. Perhaps the damage has equalled 10 percent by now? Unsure. But it is becoming clear, this creature is tough

Clarence fires his magic at the creature twice.

Wave: 37
Spark:69

The first wave of magic, strangely enough, becomes disrupted by a blast of air from the Oaken Bear. There are flashes of flame in it, bits of wood and leaf expelled being set afire, but the blast is completely thrown away.

The superheated spark, on the other hand, cuts into it, and does a bit more damage. Equal, perhaps, to Karie's strike. IT seems that magic, while effective here, ca be defended against, and the bear effective at doing just that.

Teiresias powers up his hammer, which glows a darkish color. He then wades into the combat, swiping heavily at the bear's legs.

Attack: 6, 88
Defense: 54, 84

It pulls back for the first hit, but the second solidly squashes one of its feet, doing minor damage. It seems that the limbs are abnormally tough, judging from the spread of damage, to anyone who is paying attention to such a thing.

With a brutal roar, the bear slams its paws into the ground again, causing a distinct and deep ripple.

Treequake: 57

The players near the bear are knocked back, Karie in particular thrown about 10 feet, but able to regain her feet without crashing.

The Oaken then advances on Kai, and, as the brambles that make up its claws suddenly lengthen to 2 feet in length, swipes.

ClawScratch: 68
Defense: 92.

Kai deftly slices off two of the swinging branch claws and backs away from the remainder of the strike, but the impact resonated right through the arm and shoulder muscles, giving pause.

The Oaken Bear
HP: approximately 88%.

"Hey, how does that work? He can just blow it away? ... Bet he can't blow this one away like that."

Clarence pages through his menu again, taking the one technique that he had not used in his previous battle - Flame Wall. The oaken bear is a large creature, and Clarence tries to create the flame wall directly under it as far as possible. He then points his shiny new plague staff at the beast, and follows his firewall up with a Flame Arrow.

Actions:

1. Flame Wall under the oakbear, as far as possible
2. Flame Arrow at the oakbear

The Bear has made a mistake by taking its eyes off of Brand. As it swipes at Kai, Brand takes the opportunity to slam a palm into its opposite haunch, the blast of light radiating from it hopefully knocking it off-balance. He follows up with a second pulse to its side before it can recover, then concentrates as much power as he can into both arms. Light explodes from them in a nova-like blast as he locks both together and slams them into the creature, ideally bowling it into Clarence's wall and leaving it easy prey for the others to follow up.

1: Radiant Palm
2: Radiant Combo
3&4: Bright Fist!

Maya continues her hit and run tactics, this time moving in close enough that she gets a solid bead on the Oaken Bears head - figuring that the thing has to have a weak point somewhere. Pausing for just a moment to draw aim, she launches her spear at what she would guess is an eye, then she retreats back out of range of (hopefully) any reprisal if she happened to tick it off.

[1: Move in close enough for Aimed Blow]
[2-3: Aimed Blow @ Oaken Bear's head]

The large figure of Teiresias rises from his position on the ground, recovering from the knockback caused by the Oaken Bear's attack. "This beast is a mighty foe indeed. It appears that we'll need even more strength to best it." Time to find out if this ability can stack. Teiresias focuses once more on enhancing his hammer with the dark energies available to him, and then points the end of the hammar at the Oaken Bear's stomach. "Your limbs may be hardy, but let's see how well you handle a firm blow to the skull!" Teiresias rushes the bear once again, sliding his hand up to the head of the hammer. As he reaches the beast, he crouches down, and leaps into the air, raising his fist high, aiming for the bear's chin in an uppercut. Teiresias lets his hand slide down the hilt of his weapon following the attempted blow, and as it reaches the point where the torque is greatest, he swings the hammer back down on top of the Oaken's head.

Action 1&2: Dark Enhance I (Damage)
Action 3: Uppercut
Action 4: Hammer Slam (Crown of Head)

Kai stumbles backwards from the thorns, grimacing. "Don't think playing dead is going to work on this thing..." Kai digs deep, lunges forward and puts all one's weight behind a direct thrust to the skull. Kai then steps back and checks the battle field for anything that may be of use, seeing if there's anything targetable like action items, a tree One can push over onto it, or something of the like. Kai stays on the defensive the entire time.

1+2: Piercing Blow
3: Scan Field for Anything of Use
4: Concentrate on Parries

The bear pushed back and distracted by the other party members, Karie now has time to think.

Damn... we're barely doing any damage... this fight won't go anywhere if we don't figure out something...

Remembering her fight with the RatMaster, her eyes widen.

Wait... the enemy scan skill... it has a one round cooldown, but I can at least try to figure something out...

With that, she takes a leap backwards, enters a defensive stance, and calls up the enemy scan.

Karie backs away from the boss, and takes a moment to focus. The cross-hairs appear over the boss as the option is selected, and a snapshot appears, showing the bear in a spinning profile.

The Oaken Bear
HP: 1070/1200
STATS: ???
/
???
Thorn Blast - forward blast
TreeQuake - Ground knockback
???
???
/
???
Defensive Breath = Magic deflect
*Reactive Stance* = Defends against single attacks

The key on the window notes that only one technique not already seen was uncovered with the ** note.

Kai strikes into the bear with a forward thrust.

Piercing Blow: 69
Defensive Stance(+30):65

The bear blinks off 10 points of damage as it blocks with a large trunk arm.

As Kai searches, the only unusual things on the field are the new upthrusts of rock and various smaller bits, and the fallen tree.

The bear lumbers at Kai, who prepares for the strike.

Paw Swipe: 27
Parry(+10):65

Kai easily pushes the paw aside, and the bear stumbles. As it does, Brand moves forward. Notably, the bear lets out an unusual yell as it is struck.

Radiant Palm: 82
Defense(+5): 10
Radiant Combo:67
Defense: (+10):59

The pair of brutal strikes cut deep, slicing 95 HP off of the bear. However, it turns to face Brand, who senses a new focus as he presses the direct attack.

Bright Fist:66
Reactive Defense(+20):54

Its limbs crossed, the ursine is pushed back, only taking 15 more damage.

But with great luck, while the stun effect is still going, is when the flame wall erupts around it. As it is pushed through the wide circular wall, into the center of it, it takes 35 damage. But when the flame arrow comes at it,

Arrow: 30
Breath Defense(+20): 81

It is easily dispelled. The bear curls into a vague ball shape, and suddenly kicks into a roll, throwing itself through the fire wall, taking only another 10 damage, and runs right for Brand.

Rollout:60
Dash Defense(10): 49

Brand is stunned as he is glanced by the charging wooden ball bear, and takes a good 15 damage. The roll continues, however, and Karie is next to be aimed at. She was prepared for a attack, however.

Rollout momentum: 50
Defense(15): 93

And easily sidesteps out of the way.

Teriesias' technique beeps, alerting the user with "Invalid Target" when he tries to reuse it. It doesn't drop in uses, since it doesn't fire off. Instead he uses the time to chase down the bear as it comes out of its strange technique

Uppercut and Hammer Slam: 51
Defense(30): 50

The bear blocks both attacks, its paw holding the hammer away. It responds with another flurry of thorns.

Thornblast: 64
Defense: 62

He withstands it, only taking 10 damage from the scattered blasts. At that time, from behind, Maya throws her spear.

Aimed Shot:39
Defense: 17

Struck from behind, the bear takes 45 damage. It turns and snarls, but nothing else. At about 2/3 of its health, it still seems feisty and aggressive

Karie takes a deep breath after she dodges and starts to think, observing the patterns of the boss.

Looks like that reactive stance of it kicks in when people try to attack from the front... meaning only attacks from behind or the side will have a chance to be effective...

With that, she raises her voice for the first time. "You idiots! Don't attack it from the front! It can deflect magic with its breath and reacts to attacks that way! It reacts to attacks quickly, too! We have to stagger our attacking! Kai! Make your dumb [CENSORED] useful and draw some aggro like a good tank! Everyone, only attack when its side or back turns toward you!"

She then holds her position, waiting for the first opening to get in with an Iai Strike, planning to use the momentum of the attack to get close, then plans on following up on the next opening with a Cross Slash.

[Action 1-2. Held Iai Strike @ The Oaken Bear, waiting for opening]

Maya gives Karie a what do you think I'm doing look, but says nothing. Instead, she dashes forward, maneuvering so that when she throws, she's going to be trying for a near point blank shot right at it's back.

"You got it boss!" Kai shoots a heartfelt smile to Karie. "HEY BEAR!!" Kai leaps into the air and spins One's halberd, slamming it down into the ground. "Your mother's a panda!! HAH!" Kai then makes sure One keeps between the Bear and any other's it may try to attack, concentration on defense.

Clarence moves around, trying to get to the side of the bear, and fires off a quick attack.

I should really have looked into this earlier.

He takes a moment to try to skim over the help page for the Plague Staff, trying to see how to use any special attacks it may have. There's got to be some way to use a Plague Staff to weaken an opponent's defenses.

Actions:

1. Move to fire at the side of the bear
2. Flame Spark at the bear
3. Frantically look up the help file for the Plague Staff

"Thanks, but I kind of figured that out already. OK then, if you react to attacks..."

Brand then aims a slam into the Oaken Bear, not really caring if it's focusing on him or not. In fact, it's better if it is focusing on him - he wants all of its attention directed to him. "Hey, ugly! C'mon, over here! I'm open, what are you waiting for?" He then wraps his arms around his body, as if preparing for its counter-attack. All of it is a ruse, however. As soon as the creature moves to attack him, Brand's arms open wide, and his entire body explodes with blinding radiance. The Oaken Bear is bombarded with light, heat, and pressure, hopefully dazzling even its wooden eyes into temporary uselessness. If all goes according to plan, Brand then surges forward with another strike to send the unbalanced creature toppling - but if not, he's going to decide discretion is the better part of valor, and leap back into a better defensive stance.

1: Radiant Palm
2&3: Flash Out
4: Radiant Dash OR Defensive Stance
