Or they forgot that was what they were voting for.

They thought they were voting for something else. It's fascinating to watch white Trump voters who will probably be destitute or dead in four years if the GOP guts Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare suddenly realizing that they need the programs they just sacrificed to their racism and/or sense of entitlement.

Well, it's not like Republicans haven't spent decades railing against the welfare state. The Tea Party tried to shut down the government over it, at least twice. It's not like people can have failed to notice. Sure, Trump claimed to be different but then people still voted straight Republican tickets for Senate and Congress, so yeah, they're getting what they asked for. I'm sure a lot of people believe that the cuts will only affect the undeserving (e.g. not themselves), or that such a flood of jobs will be unleashed that the safety net will be irrelevant, or that private charity should pick up the slack because it's morally wrong to force people to help the less fortunate. Well, if you think it's going to fly, try it out.

Hell, Kansas tried it. They hated it. People did kick up a fuss. And then they re-elected Sam Brownback anyway. So they'd rather gut education and police department and road repair than be governed by a Democrat. Winning!

Not that many did. More people voted for the non-Republican candidates, but because they were all crammed into the same tiny districts, Republicans got in everywhere.

In that case, congratulations for perfecting the art of letting leaders choose their own voters.

In anti-democratic democracy we lead the world. Whatever the Russians may claim to the contrary.

That's anti-democratic, yes, but it isn't even democracy. We excel in anti-democratic democracy. If it weren't for that, Bashar Al-Assad and Kim Jong Un would be far ahead of both.

We may be there soon enough. One of the only things that kept the GOP from completely remaking the government into a dystopic mass of partisan corruption under Dubya was the Civil Service; bureaucrats who didn't want to do whatever it was the Republicans wanted were protected from direct revenge over it by Civil Service rules. No longer. When the House Republicans were eliminating their only independent oversite (since retracted, at least briefly), they also reinstated a rule which lets every congresscritter insert language into any bill which would reduce the salary of any Federal worker, or budget of any Federal program, to $1. Called the Holman Rule, it was originally passed in 1876 to get rid of certain patronage positions; it was dropped in 1983 over the abuses of certain conservative congresscritters. Who just brought it back.

Now granted it's not automatic; any such cut must be passed into law. Still, an awful lot of riders make it through undetected or aren't judged worth fighting over. In the hands of creatures like these, with Trump attacking the Civil Service for his own ends, this will do a lot of damage.

Maybe I should start an Americastan thread...

Aaaaand he's already started a slap fight with the CIA. How many of Trump's supporters ever thought gutting the CIA would be the first thing he did?

But the sports team effect is so great that most of them, save the genuine national security hawks in the Senate, will go along with it. Suddenly today, Russia is good, and the CIA is bad. Tomorrow, who knows?

Now we get to watch the Senate trying to rush through Trump's cabinet confirmations before the background checks are done.

You can't even make this stuff up. Just saw the thing about the leaked memos from the British spy-for-hire who says that the Russians have blackmail material on Trump, including that he hires hookers to pee on him.

Well, if true, they can't blackmail him with it anymore.

So they can blackmail him with proof that the web gurus were right, and his campaign was actively coordinating with the Russian Government for months. Or they can threaten to call their loans, seize property, etc. Or perhaps release pictures of his...hands. There's always something.
